Why is just the right side of my head hurting?

Woke up with it and its been getting progressively worse all day. Right side of my face feels really sore but kind of numb, right ear inside and out killing, right side of throat painful and hurts to swallow, right side of head feels likeits in a vice with the odd sshooting pain.

Other than that feel ok, quite tired but ok.

What is it?

Well it might be a migraine but do you have any history of those? Probably not if you are asking on here.

Go to A&E as potentially this is both urgent and serious (although probably not, serious causes need to be ruled out ASAP). If you go to "out of hours" or call a triage service, depending on what is available where you are, make sure they know that this is a new kind of headache for you and describe the numbness too.

Thanks for the reply raw coconut, I have had the odd migraine, usually only one every couple of years and always starts with my vision being affected, it doesn't feel like that and my vision is fine. Feel like I would be over reacting to see someone at the moment, I can still function etc its just there and although quite painful I can tolerate it. It is worrying me though.

Thinking it could be an ear infection. .Think I will sleep on it and see how it goes tomorrow. Thank you.

It would NOT be an overreaction to see someone, honestly! It is probably a migraine but I think the fact that is is different from what you normally get means it should be looked at - and just in case it is (small risk) something really really serious like a brain bleed, that should be now (you said it had been getting worse all day? Is that still the case?).

Not meaning to scare you but I think it's worth at least phoning someone about it...

Yes it is getting a bit worse, will get dc settled and ring out of hours, they usually do a phone consultation.

They think its an ear infection, as my throat is also hurting on one side, to call back tomorrow if it worsens. Thanks for the advice, feel better now I have spoken to someone.

Ouch. Been there. Have they given you amitryptaline? Taken in the evening its good for nerve pain. Also a short course of diazepam would help. And do lots of gentle, slow, neck exercises: up and down, side to side, ear to shoulder, push your head back as if you were a chicken, plus shoulder rotations. Do these morning and night, and if you can find a good masseur - especially one who works with trigger point deactivation - you can get your neck in a better state to prevent it happening again.

Good luck.

Thanks I have got naproxen anti inflammatory, he said the nerve is in my head behind the jaw, probably caused by a virus which explains why I have felt so crap for the last month. Need to step away from Google bit worried it will never go and lead to other things now

I have had that with a virus. You need to be seen though.

Onesleep - how long did it take to go? I have seen the doc and he said to go back next week if the tablets don't work.

It took over a week to go properly, I felt off for a month or so, but able to work etc. If I get a virus now I occasionally still get the tingle and know to slow down. Hope you feel better soon.
