It's going to depend very much on how many iron tablets you are taking, what kind of tablets, how long you have been taking them, whether you are able to take them with vitamin C to improve absorption and finally, how well you absorb anyway.

I am 4 years in to trying to raise my ferritin levels past the magic 70 and keep them there, but that may be an exceptionally long time.

express what are your ferritin levels? if you don't mind me asking. I had an appointment the other day, and was told mine was 16, which I think is low but the Dr wont give me any iron tablets because he said I was within normal range, also my haemoglobin was fine. I have bought some ferrous sulphate and ordered floresene, I am also waiting for my appointment with a trichologist, I am also having hair loss. The Dr has basically said that my blood tests are normal so there is nothing wrong with me.

16 is very low but the nhs wont treat it, just buy spatone and take 2 a day and you will soon feel better.

Thanks merci have you got low iron?

yes, i was also diagnosed hypothyroid, is there a reason for your low iron do you think? mine was 13 and went up to 90 with the double dose spatone. it drops again if i stop supplementing. it makes a massive difference to how i feel.

merci I have had blood tests, and they have come back normal, like thyroid, hormonal etc. I asked for a ferritin check myself and it came back as 16, I also was tested for h pylori a few years ago, I didn't even know until I read my print out the other day.

Sorry meant to say I was tested positive for h pylori, but my Dr said I don't need it treated Confused.

Sorry for late reply.
prettyanddainty I can't remember exactly- roughly around lower teens but I suspect now even lower as I've had heavier periods since the initial blood test due to coil removal.
I've been on ferrous fumerate 210mg (65mg elemental iron, whatever that means) x 3 daily or 2 months. I'm still exhausted, still get palpitations but easy bruising has subsided and the hairloss today when I showered seem less! I feel it's two steps forward one step back. My period is due next week, so if the dizziness subsides once I'm on, I'll feel more positive. Did your doctor refer you to see a trichologist or did you go private?
RockyD can't tolerate vit C but have been drinking orange juice with iron. I've been a vegetarian for 10 years but have now resorted to eating steak twice a week because I'm sooo desperate to feel and look normal again.
mercibucket out of curiosity how many sachets of spartone did you take? How much is double dosage?

express I am going private, I have booked in to see her on the 27th of this month. The Dr said my levels are normal, so was against me seeing a trichologist and thought it might be a waste of money.

Please post and let me know how you get on at the trichologist - I'm curious which tests will be carried out.
Just to add, I've also been taken biotin from Holland and Barret. This I found has thickened the hair root but not contributed to stopping hairloss however my eyebrows look rather lush and thick now lol!

Hi yes I will let you know, I wont really need any blood tests as I have all the print outs from my blood tests and I will take them along, unless they ask for different blood tests.

My last ferritin was 6. I can't take iron tablets/liquid, so had IV iron (cosomofer) infusion.

merci did you lose your hair, if so has it grown back after taking spatone?

Report
Reenypip · 20/08/2013 09:52

I've had hair loss before and my iron was low, but dr said it was because of my hormones

Report
mercibucket · 20/08/2013 21:47

i did lose hair, but that also goes with hypothyroid, so hard to say, but yes, i shed much less now. i bruise easily if i dont take iron regularly

Hi express I went to the the trichologist today, she was lovely. I had all my blood tests done at my surgery already, so I just took them with me today. She said all my bloods were fine apart from my ferritin which was 16, she said it was too low, and it needed treating, she also said that my vitamin d deficiency was also a contributor, I am on meds for that anyway. I am going to the Dr on Tuesday to talk to him about treating my h pylori, cant believe they said if it's not bothering me then they don't need to treat it.
