would someone who drank half a litre of vodka per night for about a year have done to their body?

The liver will have become engorged and fatty and therefore less able to cope with processing waste, etc. worst case scenario liver failure which unless transplanted can be fatal. Best case the drinking stops and the liver if not too damaged will recover on its own. Also depends on age, the younger they are the worse the damage as under 20's livers simply can't cope with it.
Worth getting it checked out either way especially if the skin or whites of the eyes have a yellow tinge.

Every organ is damaged but each person has their weak spots so one person would get liver failure while another would get dementia .

Can be damaged

So long as you stop abusing your body with heavy drinking, by not drinking at all for a long while, along with generally eating a good healthy diet & general detox, the liver is the one organ that can actually regenerate itself - you can help this along with herbs such as milk thistle & burdock & eating or drinking beet root juice & lots of good fluids to help flush out toxins, so so long as the person you are asking about is strong enough to quit, the out look can be very good

Good luck

Floating stools due to too much fat not being digested properly are another sign of liver damage

It's reversible until the cirrhosis stage then it's irreversible
Short answer is, get liver function blood tests done and stop drinking and take vitamin b co strong and thiamine.

Thanks for the replies all of you. Sorry I didn't come back sooner.

I don't think she's dependent on alcohol, just got into a bad habit.
The only thing she experiences is lower back pain?

I'll pass on the information you've given, and thank you again x

Low back pain might suggest kidney damage/infection - I have chronic kidney disease, not drink related, but if I drink even a little I get really bad lowback/kidney pain - liver is stomach pain, gall bladder area & feeling liverish - hung over - my DB had liver problems due to drink, but he turned it around

"I don't think she's dependent on alcohol, just got into a bad habit."

I would say that drinking half a litre of vodka every day is more than just a bad habit.
