Mum being tested for cancer after having 3 blood clots

My mum inform me yesterday that they are sending her for various test for cancer as this may be pressing on veins causing the blood clots.
she's had 3 in the past year started with one after flying then when she came off the medication she got another one, they stopped the treatment again and she got another one which she didn't go to the docs about and ended up with it going to the lung.

I have a blood clotting disorder which is hereditary but they've told her they can't find out what's wrong as there hasn't been enough research or is it due to money they can't do a genetic test( unless she's had it already and doesn't know it) my brother has been advised to go and be tested.

Any advice, knowledge?

Goodness me. Your poor mum has really been through it, and it must have been terribly worrying for all of you. I have had a clot in the lung following childbirth. Once you have one, you are susceptible to another in the near term. It sounds like she should have been kept on treatment for life or a longer period, and that may have prevented the two additional clots. I am not a doctor but I am surprised they are not looking into a clotting disorder, as opposed to cancer? I really hope they get her sorted. My clot has affected me quite badly from an anxiety perspective. I do have a condition which can lead to clots, and therefore I will be on medication for life.

Cancer can cause blood clots - from our experience it isn't because of anything pressing on veins but because having cancer can make the blood more prone to clotting.

Of course, cancer isn't the only thing that causes blood clots - but it is a very sensible thing to rule out. If it does turn out to be the cause, tackling it as soon as possible is the very best option.

I hope it's not!

I hope she is Ok.

AFAIK cancerous tumours can put pressure on various organs, and so on - it could affect the vascular system in the same way but I don't know how or why this would cause clotting issues. Unless she is having clots in the same place again and again?

I would agree with PP that it's possible they suspect cancer could be causing a change in the blood mechanism, ie perhaps cancer in general can cause clotting issues (it does alter your blood chemistry but I don't know how) or maybe they are thinking of a particular cancer that is found in the blood.

Whatever they are testing for, I really hope she is alright. Take it easy on yourself, it must have been a big shock to have this news.

Themobstersknife- my clots (ive had 3, the 1st ones being big ones) have happen after and during pregnancy and I know that your at higher risk during pregnancy, got tested because I wanted to be a surrogate for friends.

Currently on a course of warfarin after the birth of baby now 12 weeks, they don't know about further treatment as there are different views on what to do from the doctors and gp.

It's effected me too mentally and physical and don't know whether I could cope
With having to go on it for life.

My mum has been told she's on the wafarin long term now.

Many thanks for replies
