Mirena coil - anyone got anything good to say bout it?

minxthemanx · 27/06/2012 20:20

My gynaecologist has recommended that I have the mirena coil, to help combat severe PMT which is getting worse, and makes me a horrid cow. I'm happy to give it a try, but have read nothing good about it on here - all the posts I can find refer to horrendous weight gain (really don't need that, thanks,) and PMT (?!). Has anyone had a good experience of it? The (lady gynaecologist reckons it's the best thing to happen in the field of gynaecology!

Sorry no answers minx, but my doctor has just recommended one for me too as I have just been diagnosed with fibroids - so I'll be interested to hear what people have to say about them.

I love mine. I had sporadic spotting for the first six months, and haven't had a period since. No period, no PMT (though, oddly, I have had just one day when I felt murderous rage and snapped at everyone!)

No weight gain, no downsides for me at all.

Loved mine, no side effects at all other than no longer turning into a banshee once a month

I love mine. Not sure if it made me a little more hairy though Blush but that might just be age related! Virtually no periods, bit of spotting only, and no proper PMT. Had hideous periods before, even on combined pill.

Yes, me Grin

I've had mine in for 4 years with no problems at all. I have had not one migraine, where I suffered terribly with them before, no periods to worry about, no weight gain and have found it to be generally hassle free.

I'm interested too. As well has heavy loss and long periods and moodiness, I also get extremely greasy skin and hair with terrible, terrible spot breakouts on face and even neck Blush

Will the coil help with this? Please say Yes Sad

Mine's been a miracle. Before mirena i bled all month, every month without a break. Post mirena I get an occasional light bleed but that's it, no pain, no PMT, no weight gain.

It wasn't for me but I think you have to try it to see if it suits you. It sounds like it's worth a try, I definitely didn't experience any PMT with it of that helps Smile

I'm on my second; had the first in for 5 years, and now this one is coming up to 6 years (may now be menopausal, but no idea as I've not had a period for 11 years!). It's fantastic and things I've read on here bear no resemblance to my experience. After I had the first one fitted I lost (on purpose) 2 stone and have not noticed it causing weight gain since, what I have gained I blame on greed and indolence,

I get the occasional period type pain and perhaps some PMT but probably I'm just bad tempered, it's certainly better than it was pre Mirena. I think one problem with reading things posted on any topic is that those who have been badly affected tend to post, whereas those who are quite happy can't be bothered.

I had mine fitted for contraception (4 DC, the last 3 in 3.5 years) and I just cannot fault it. The first one was painless to fit, and I had some spotting for a few months, the second one more painful but very little spotting.

It's perfect for me, but I'm sure plenty will be on to tell you their ghastly experiences.

Very quick and only slight discomfort when fitted, no heavy periods, rarely any bleeding, no PMT. if you don't get on with it it's only about five minutes with a nurse/ GP to remove.

No problems with mine at all, I tend to forget I even have it. Occasional bout of spotting, which is often over before I've realised it's started, not much more than that. No weight gain, apart from that which was due to too much cake, and I've lost all that. No PMT, but then I've never had much of that anyway.

I'm on my third - no problems, no periods. I know a few other people with them in RL who are happy

basildonbond · 27/06/2012 20:50

oh, mine is fab! I hated it for the first 3 months - constant spotting - but then that stopped and I completely forget it's there - I discovered a box of tampons in the bathroom the other day and it was like uncovering an archaeological find Grin

No problems with PMT, and although I have put on a bit of weight since having it put in I suspect being middle-aged and not doing as much exercise has more to do with that than the coil ...

Okay, so I did fall pregnant on the Mirena coil, but the odds of that are very, very low.

But apart from that, it was brilliant. No periods, and didn't even know it was there, really.

I've had mine nearly 5 years and have had no trouble with it after the first month, which was quite crampy. But I did not have a good experience having it put in - would recommend having it done by someone who does lots, so your gynae should be fine! - so that may have had an effect.

Because it was so horrible having it fitted, i told dh back then that he had 5 years to sort out a vasectomy, which he hasn't done, but tbh I'm half tempted to just get another one (fitted by someone else) as it has been so hassle free since then.

minxthemanx · 27/06/2012 20:56

Oh girls, you've really cheered me up. I was so happy after visit to gynae, as it sounded like Mirena might really help me - even fluoxetine doesn't keep me sane any more. Then I saw posts on here about "2 stone gained in 2 months" etc, and felt very deflated! I'm a size 14 as it is, healthy and fit, but certainly don't want to put on weight. Now you've all cheered me up, and I'll definitely give it a go. Interesting to hear about migraines too - I get horrible headaches during periods. Thanks, ladies.

I love mine.

No more babies or periods since it was fitted. Result.

I am, however, very unsure of it being renewed. Because I'm a baby, and don't like people fiddling with my cervix.

Oh, and no weight gain.

Well, a couple of pounds, but that would be down to never doing any exercise and liking red wine and cream cakes too much.

Sorry to hijack, but no one has mentioned my dodgy, greasy, period skin and hair.

Will the coil help that?

I've had mine for coming up 4 years now and still really pleased with it, I had heavy periods and bad PMT, I had must admit I did have spotting for the first 8 months and always had to wear a pant liner, but that dissapeared over night. I now have no periods, and no PMT, I don't remember any weight gain.. go for it, but give yourself time to get used to it...

Really pleased with mine too - forget its there & just a bit of spotting every month. Can't comment on greasy hair or spots, other than to say I don't get them (within reason obviously!). I have also lost all the baby weight (over 3 stone) whilst being on it, so no weight gain here either. Grin

I love mine; have had it 6 yrs and am getting it replaced by the GP on Monday. Almost no periods at all - occasional spotting which doesn't even really need a panty liner. No spots, deffo no weight gain, no PMT, no more monthly cramps. Fitting it was a breeze - not even nervous about Mon
I've 3 good friends who are Drs and they all have one.
