Broken toes.......whats the likelihood?

About 10 mins ago I (stupidly) walked into the corner of the dresser in my kitchen. My 2 smallest toes on my right foot are bloody hurting now.

Do you think I could have broken the toes, or just will have bruised them? I did walk into the dresser with some force? I cant really walk on them and they are throbbing as we speak.

Anyone ever broken any toes before? And did you know straight away.

Just thought I would ask before I make a fool of myself at the hospital!

TIA

Don't go to the hospital. They won't do anything about it, anyway.

Broken toes (other than the big one) don't matter.

Really? Whys that? Would I not be able to walk if it was my big toe?

Thanks!

They wont do anything at the hospital, apart from maybe strap them . If it's broken it will take about 6 weeks to heal. I've broken 3 toes, the 2 middle ones together and my little toe. The little toe was a lot less painful to walk with broken. They will probably go all swollen and black / purple for a bit.

i broke mine, second biggest toe earlier this year. hospital won't do anything to it, if its hurting, strap it to the toe next to it, wear slippers to protect it.

dh dropped a glass chopping board on my foot, ouch!.

hurt more when i got cramp in it during labour with ds the week after.

will take 6 weeks to heal, put your feet up on xmas day and get everyone to run round for you

Lol!

I think I will put on my big boots just to be on the safe side! I have already knocked my foot again on a door!

Hiking boots are a good way to protect your feet if they're injured.

You can hurt your toes quite badly without breaking them - if they still hurt 2-3 weeks later, you broke them.

I've broken loads of toes. The only one that looks like it's been broken is the one that got bashed up after I broke it, when I was pretending to beat some bloke up.

I once stuidly carried a smallish metal filing cabinet down some stairs.

Needless to say I dropped the bloody thing on my toe.

I sat for 2 hours gipping because of the pain. I then decided in my wisdom to go to A&E. Had it x-rayed and it wasn't even broke.
The toe itself had grown bigger than my foot and was a lovely shade of reddy/purple.

I broke one on each foot a couple of months ago. I don't even know how! I'm always walking into things and I must just have been having a particularly clumsy couple of days.

It was great! I strapped one of them to it's neighbour and it's now straighter than it has been in about five years .

Seriously, I did find strapping helped alleviate the pain a bit and helped prevent further knocks.

Yes definitely strap together and definitely don't bother getting it xrayed. When I went they didn't wrap it up as well as dh had done before I left!! Have broken both little toes and they were agony - couldn't walk at first then had to wear one of dh shoes coz couldn't find any of mine it didn't hurt to walk in - felt like a real plonker! Black and blue for 6 weeks or more.

Thanks guys!

My foot is swollen now and I have a lovely purple bruise at the base of my 2 middle toes and on my second smallest one! Also have a lighter bruise that just looks like a shadow spreading halfway down my foot!

I went to my works christmas do last night and even managed a wee boogie! (well it has to be done doesnt it!?), but maybe the alcohol numbed the pain!

Ok, so its been 2 weeks now since I did this and one of my toes is still really hurting. Also my foot looks really weird - kind of puffed up and my toes look bent over.

It hurts to move my second from last toe and sometimes it aches/throbs.

Do you think I may have broken my toe after all? Should I go for an x ray do you think? (I am quite curious actually!)

I would say from how you describe it that you have broken it and it may have set wrong.

I would go to a&e and get it sorted if i were you.

Thanks MrsBubsDeVere

Do you really think so? Oh looks like I will have to pay a visit.

Do you think the hospitals will be busy this time of year?

Report
MrsBubsDeVere · 30/12/2005 10:23

Not necessarily busy at this time, on New Years Eve and New Years Day definately.

I am the queen of broken toes, I have broken so many that i cannot count on two hands. Its better to be safe that sorry, you may just need some strong anti-inflammatory's but you don't want to be in pain over the new year.

That's very true!

I will have to leave dh with the kids when he gets in this afternoon - oh well!

Let us know how you get on, also, remember to keep you foot elevated, they say just above heart level, when you are resting, this can help with the swelling.
