Circumcision

i am 37 weeks pg not sure if having boy or girl but if we have a boy dh wants him to have a circumcision i not sure. what age is best to be done and how do i go about having it done

If you ask your midwife she/he may be able to give you the name of a surgeon who will make a home visit and follow up visit for you.. I'd recommend that you get it done asap and go for the local anaesthetic and 'Plastibell' procedure. The foreskin will then fall off after a few days (similar to the cord.)

If it's for religious reasons it will usually be a ritual circumcision. A lot of Jews and Muslims will choose circumcision but not necessarily do so ritually, IYSWIM. And I'm not sure if there is a ritual involved for Muslims as there is for Jews. I'm sure someone will know.

A GP friend in Birmingham told me that there they are offering it on the NHS.

We had our dss done when they were about three weeks old and that worked out fine - went to a private dr, and it cost about £90 each time.

As far as I am aware the only areas where it is offered on the NHS are those where there is a high concentration of families circumcising for religious reasons. It is a contentious service, but as there can be nasty consequences of circumcision (mostly to do with inadequate infection control) some areas have chosen to offer a service.

That seems logical, if the cost of treating subsequent infections is high.

Question for any Muslim mnetters. Jews have ritual circumcisions performed which don't involve anaesthetic. Is it the same for Muslims? Or is it usual to have circumcision performed medically?

BTW at circumcision without anaesthetic. The main problem is also that once the cut is made it is impossible to get near the baby to clean up the area properly.Local anaesthetic obviously hurts but once effective the circumcision can go ahead and the area can be properly cleaned/dressed afterwards. There is an argument that the pain of a single cut in a ritual circumcision is less than that of local anaesthetic injections in a medical one. I'm not convinced.

My nephew had ritual circumcision and was infected afterwards, poor little thing.

DH is Jewish but I'm not. We had DS circumcised but not ritually, used Plastibell procedure. It was no problem, Dr had to come and get us out of the hospital canteen!

bauble99 I don't think it was cost related (although that would be a reasonable reason IYSWIM) I think it was more about meeting a local need. However it was from an article I read a while back (I'm in the NHS) so I don't know how unusual the set up was.

Hmmmm. I can see how that might be a contentious policy. Circumcision is not usually needed I'm not sure how I feel about taxes paying for this. Our boys have all had circumcision (my DH is Jewish) but I would not expect the NHS to pay for it.

If your dh is Jewish, doesn't he know how to go about it? I thought they had trained people to do that kind of thing now, in the Synagogue? I would talk to your religious leaders about it.

b99 fyi I am in Qld, Australia and haven't found a dr yet who uses anesthetic, hence the reason my two dss are not done. The docs available to me make mum stay with baby and there was no way that was going to happen as I couldn't even stay for needles!!! (Heard a circumcision without anesthetic being done when dd was waiting first immunisation in next room).

May I just ask what circumcision represents/means in the jewish culture?? I am to admit that I don't know and I don't know anybody Jewish to ask.
