antibiotics/stomach bacteria/MMR

My ds of 17 months has just completed his first course of antibiotics. friends have said this will have killed all the good bacteria in his stomach and live yogurt could remedy this. Then my mum comes along and says in her day you weren't allowed to get your vaccinations if you had been on antibiotics in last 10 days. He is due for MMR this week. If anyone has heard of either these bits of information before and has any views on their validity they would be gratefully received.

well probiotics can't hurt

DD is 18 months and started on antibiotics on Friday night ... she also loves drinking the little yogurts with probiotics so I'm doing them both at the same time ..

as for MMR .. I don't know .. DD had hers last thursday and has pneumonia now (I gave DS sepvax so this is my first experience)

.. I think because it compromised her immunity maybe .. maybe .. personally I don't see the issue in delaying the MMR a few weeks just in case

I didn't let her have MMR until she was 18 months anyway

oh your poor DD. i hope the antibiotics kick in on the pneomonia soon. i think i will get some of the little drinks. I have delayed the MMR a few times (they have been calling him since he was 12 months) and waiting for a spell when he is cold free, not coming down with one, not just recovering from one etc etc. he's on fine form at the moment but with winter here no doubt the next cold / bug is just rond the corner. oh decisions decisions.

it's true - antibiotics kill all the good bugs in the tummy and often lead to stomach upsets. dd always used to get a little bit lactose intolerant after any major illness too.

as for vaccinations - I have been delaying ds's MMR until he is completely well (so it's now late - he gets chesty after every cold and gets a cold often because of nursery). never heard of a 10 day rule after anti-bis but it makes sense in a common sense kind of way. have you asked your doctor about it?
