Vertigo - any experience / advice?

I had a vertigo attack last night (following me blowing my nose!) - this has never happened to me before - I found it quite scary TBH, and after the initial not being able to stand up and room-spinning sensation had gone away, I was left feeling very light headed, nauseous, and dizzy if I moved too quickly. I phoned NHS direct and they got me to ring the out-of-hours doctor who said it was a vertigo attack, and that they didn't need to see me.

This morning, I felt fine when I got up, but as the morning has progressed the nausea and the light-headedness have returned, as has the dizzy sensation if I move too quickly. Even looking at the TV / computer monitor or trying to read is making me feel slightly sick!

Does anyone know how likely this is to continue? I play the oboe in an amateur orchestra and we have a rehearsal tomorrow afternoone and a concert in the evening - am I still likely to be feeling like this by then?

I'm trying to take it easy today - which isn't easy when you've got an active 2-year-old DS round the place.

Any help / advice would be appreciated - TIA

I had vertigo several years ago after a 3-day mini cruise. IIRC it lasted about a week.

Hi JTS
My mum suffers with vertigo on occasions, I've just phoned her to ask what she takes for it - stemetil (sp) as prescribed by doc. She has seen a specialist about it who told her its an imbalance of fluids in the ears usually caused by excess mucus when she suffers with hay fever or other allergies (she avoids wheat for this reason). She can tell when an attack is coming on and takes the medication to lessen the effects. Hope you are well soon and this was a one off! X

JTS, it's also called Labyrinthitis (sp?), had it a couple of times quite severely, lasting about a week all in both times but every now & again I have a wee turn which feels the same but doesn't come to anything. I had Stemetil the first time but had to get a stronger dose after a couple of days as it wasn't making much difference. First time was horrendous I vomited for hours & slept on the floor for 2 nights as I couldn't stand the feeling if I moved in the bed. Walked everywhere holding onto walls for about 36 hours. Sounds like you may have had a mild attack as I imagine if it was bad your GP would at least leave you a prescription if not ask to see you. Hope it clears up quickly it's v yucky!

Hi everyone - thanks for posting - I'm feeling much better today, no dizziness or feeling light-headed and no nausea - so it was obviously a 'one off' kind of thing. Like Jbck says it was obviously quite a mild attack (though it didn't feel mild for the first 10 mins!!!)

At least now I'll know what it is if it happens again!!!
