Depends what strain you've got.

Many varieties (or strains) of E. coli are harmless. But some strains cause diseases, such as the E. coli food poisoning that we study. Strains of E. coli associated with this food poisoning are referred to as enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC for short) because the symptoms include haemorrhage from the digestive tract.

In North America, E. coli food poisoning is commonly called hamburger disease because it is often acquired by eating poorly-cooked minced beef. When contaminated beef is ground up, the bacteria are spread throughout the meat, and are killed only by thorough cooking. It is estimated that as few as 10 surviving bacteria will establish an infection.

E.coli can come from a variety of sources the most common type is caused by some bugs from your faeces getting up into your urethra and kidneys. This is quite common hence the always wipe front to back rule.

Food poisoning from E.coli is actually very rare.

There are hundreds of different strains most are harmless only a few are really dangerous.

It sounds like you may have a UTI if it is in your urine and these are easily cured. It's not a slur on your personal hygiene most women get UTIs from time to time.

No, meat is just where humans commonly pick it up. I'm sure it can live in dairy products too for example.

I've had lots of UTI's and yes if its a bad one I do get sharp pains in my sides that really catch my breath! The AB's should sort you out pretty quickly..... and drink LOTS of water!!!

E coli is the most common cause of urine infections, it lives in your bowel and urine infections are more common in women simply because of our anatomy - anus relatively close to urethra. It's not due to food poisoning if it's in your wee and nothing to do with poor hygeine either. A short course of antibiotics should clear it up, hope you feel better soon .
