My ds is 4 and I think has nits from nursery, his head is itchy and seems to have tiny white bits on the hair like dandruff. Can't see anything on his scalp.

nits are the eggs. they are kind of yellowy white and really stick to the hair, right by the scalp. the lice are kind of transparent and lightbrown.
best treatment is wet combing and i like using a tea tree conditioner and leave-in spray.

Get a Nitty Gritty comb (I find the ordinary plastic ones to be a waste of time) and wash condition and comb ever four days or so until they've gone. You comb a section of hair then wipe it off on tissue paper and inspect.

Nits is the name of the egg cases. The creatures themselves are called headlice. They are about the size of a sesame seed depending on age and have wriggly legs.

You can get these combs in some chemists or online.

IME NONE of the potions works. I've gone from tea tree to full on organo phosphates to no avail.

Good luck.

This looks like sand in his hair, it's not right in his scalp, more like towards the ends.

Wouls he be constantly scratching if it was nits? I'm hoping it is sand.......

DD sometimes comes home from nursery with sand in her hair. kids throw it around...

It may be sand today, but tomorrow ...

There's no avoiding nits IME so you'd do well to be prepared.

The eggs are brwon when waiting to hatch and a pearly white when they hatch.

The lice themselves are brown and come in 4 sizes from tiny to the size of a thinner match head.

There was a *great program on the yesterday on Radio 4.

Do you know they break out of the egg sac by swallowing air and farting it out, and that makes them pop out of the shell! Amazing stuff

Did you not enjoy it? Or was it too yucky?

I thought it was great fun, and just what I needed while flogging through the traffic after picking up the kids from school

Done all the recommended thing of wet combing with conditioner etc. complete waste of time no matter how conscientious I am (sometimes spending 3 hours at a time going through the hair - once even pulling out the hairs with eggs on them)- the bliddy things always came back. Even tried getting the bliddy things drunk on vodka and tea tree conditioner - didn't work either

Go straight for the Lyclear now - brilliant stuff, jobs done in minutes. Still continue to check them daily with an electronic nit comb, and wet combing when they have a bath, just to see if there are any in the hair!

mb, it was just awful (I'm a radio producer, and probably a bit picky ) - I'm not squeamish, make progs about nits/poo a lot myself..
