hi i need some advice my toddler is overwaight, i've had loads of advice off health visitors and off friends and family but nothing seems to stop her gaining waight, people keep saying not to worry and that she will lose it when she starts moving around more but she has always been an active baby and she's been walking for a while now, i am at a bit of a loss, has any body got any ideas

How over weight it over weight though? As long as your dd is eating healthily, i don't suppose there's a lot you can do. Not that i'm an expert, but if she is, then i'm sure she will be fine, and will prob lose it

at 52 weeks she was 30pounds 14oz i haven't had her waighd recently because i was told to give it a couple of months to see how she gets on, she looks and feels alot heavier now thow, she is getting a ballanced diet and running around, and apart from her waight she is very healthy

What do you mean she is overweight? What is her diet like?

before her last weigh in i was asked to do a diet diary for the health visitors to have a look at what i was feeding her and she said that even she didn't get a good diet like that, i am perhaps worrying over nothing but it is a big concern

does she look fat? is she tall? I ask because my ds1 was really heavy but when measured his weight was in proportion to his height and he wasn't fat in comparison with other children iyswim. Who says she is overweight? hv's? take it with a pinch of salt.

kate she sounds fine to me. i have photos of my ds at 18 months wearing age three clothes and he is like a whippet now. just ignore health visitors because without being horrid, a lot of them talk crap and only deal in averages.if your child isn't the average then they stress. as my husband pointed out, not everyone can BE average....they need lessons in statistics!

but baby podgy or fat? if you think fat then just makes sure she gets lots of exercise.i really wouldn't stress too much.

Just avoid sweets / chocolate, puddings, cakes, biscuits too many chips (say more than once per week) and crisps - then you should be doing okay...although it sounds as if you are probably avoiding these in any case?

i've been told that before and do i agree, i am probably worry over nothing she is a very happy and healthy baby, i just dont want her to carry on putting on waight and become an obese child

She won't - not if you are avoiding feeding her cr*p, which you are (avoiding it, that is!)

Obesity except for a minority of medical conditions is caused by eating the wrong things....

She doesn't sound that big too me.
My daughter weighed 26lb at 52 weeks and 30lb at 18 months, she was always the chubbiest and tallest baby out of all my friends children she wore clothes a size larger than her age.
Dd2 is 21 weeks and already 19lb, she is in 6-9 month clothes.
Unless she is unhealthy i wouldn't worry.
You would worry more if she wasn't eating and was under weight.
I say the bigger the better !!!

DS was a total bloater as a toddler - always two or three sizes up in clothes from age etc. At 13 months he was over the 100 centile curve and was exactly the dimensions of a small boulder. He always enjoyed eating and although he was a bit chubby he was also very, very solid IYKWIM. As one of my friends delicately put it, it looked as though he may run out of skin at some stage because it was all pulled a bit tight. We never regulated his diet, although he did not then or now eat sweets or any junk food at all. He is now 4 and entirely normal size - slim but not slender. I am very clear that that was his genetic pre-disposition and if your daughter is eating well (ie good quality food) then I would not regulate it in any way whatsoever.

We never "urged" food on DS as a toddler or tried to tempt him to finish something if he didn't want to (as there was never any danger that he would fade away before the next meal time!)

Interestingly DS has no food issues whatsoever, in that sometimes he asks for seconds or even thirds, sometimes he says he does not want pudding, sometimes he will eat half of his pudding and then not finish the other half. He enjoys food and seems to be very good at "obeying his appetite", which I think is a great skill to have (and one that, sadly, I don't have!)

i'm glad to here other people have had big baby's because all of the other baby's that my family and freinds have had have been tiny, i think what worried me the most is the health visitors reaction to her waight, it was as thow they had never seen a big baby before and that i was doing something wrong.
