advice /suggestions wanted for 2 yr old with viral conjunctivitis Dr. won't prescribe anything

Hi please can you help? My 2yr old DS has Viral Conjunctivitis. I took him to the Dr. yesterday but he says he'll have to get over it himself as there was no differnce in people who had treatment and people who didn't.
If he is right or not, DS still has v.poorly eyes, they look burnt on the inside almost. Is there anything I can do to help him? I am breastfeeding my yougest and I've read on past threadds that you can use breast milk to help it.. how is this done exactly??

Yes, bmilk is excellent. Either squirt directly into child's eye if your aim is good, or express onto a clean teaspoon and drip into child's eye. That way you can also disguise what it is you're actually using from squeamish older children! Repeat every few hours. At least as effective as eyedrops, and no side-effects apart from making the vision a little blurry until the milk clears from the eyes.

It's true, giving the treatment makes no difference to either the longevity or misery of conjunctivitis.

I have also heard that breastmilk is at least as effective, if not more so.

I'm afraid that bmilk is unlikely to be effective against 'viral' conjunctivitis. It's the antibacterial qualities in breast milk that make it effective.
I'm sure it will soothe babies eyes though Dd has this and she too was refused antiobiotics and we were told the same thing. I just had to keep bathing her eyes in cool, boiled water. She hated it but they did look better after a day or so.
It's nasty I know. Hope it sorts itself soon

Thanks everyone, I'll try the breastmilk and if it works it works, if it doesn't it doesn't. Hopefully this thing wil lrun its course and go as quickly as it came.
