Sorry, boring! which HEADLICE COMB?

Any opinions anyone.... NITTY GRITTY or BUGBUSTER? I am going completely NUTS (or should that be nits) with headlice on my kids again. I've spent a fortune and combed and combed.... AND COMBED and COMBED...

I bought one of those combs that cost about £10. Expensive but worth it. It gets the eggs out aswell as th lice.
Bloody horrible little bleeders arnt they.
I really dont like using the nit solution, so I use a nit shampoo & conditioner, then comb through. Its taken ages to get as far as I have. But its other parents fault that are not checking their childrens heads regularly.

Even worse when you get them from your child.

I get the plastic ones from the chemist, they get the eggs out better than the metal ones

I admit the usual plastic ones work better than the metal ones, but the one I use has wire around every tooth, so its great at getting them all out.

Using baby oil on the hair when its wet helps them to come out easier.

Ive also heard that vinegar work to kill them too, although it does make your hair smell like a chip shop.

I went into a total panic and bought everything Nitty Gritty sells, expensive and we only had them on the 9 m baby and never saw any again so far for 2 years.

Friend who kept getting them recommended using tea tree shampoo and conditioner for prevention all the time (they hate greasy hair and tea tree) - the only problem is it stings the eyes so we have stopped. But it's there if needed again....

I've found bugbuster the best. You get 4 combs for cheaper than the Nitty Gritty one. The nitty gritty is OK though, but I don't like the fact that I can't see the little blighters with it like you can with the bright yellow plastic ones.

While I was in the pet shop buying guinea pig food.. I noticed a flea comb! its the same as my nit comb only sturdier plastic... it cost about 79p and has two combs/sides to it, it gets eggs out and lice...

Nitty Gritty. Did DD's hair last week - first with comb supplied, then with pet comb and then with the nitty gritty. The NG managed to find nits that the others had obviously missed.

Oh gawd! Nits are the bain of my life. I spent so long in the summer holidays sorting it and they've back again already.

Am I the only one who catches head lice as well as the children? I have very long, thick hair which I am thinking of getting rid of after our last battle against nits. I just can't face the combing again and it bloody wrecks your hair.

thanks so much gals/guys for your input,I ALSO have found lice in MY hair!!! I have been fighting this battle since the summer, buying every available treatment from the chemist plus just doing combing with tea tree stuff. Have spent a fortune. Plus with one asthmatic dd in the family have stopped short of putting DDT on their hair which is what I believe they did in the "olden days". With regular combing I can get keep them under control but I just CANNOT get rid of them!

like manky off white - sometimes darker little tiny white bits that literally cling to the hair.

They are like cream coloured / light brown sesame seed shape things, stuck tightly to the shaft of the hair. If they are near the scalp they are probably live eggs, if further down, probably old, empty eggs. You can pick them off with your nails / tweezers.

Someone told me ages ago that Nits do not like the smell of almond and that if I used the L'oreal kids cherry almond shampoo with conditioner that we would never have a problem with nits again.....I was desperate as DS2 was always getting them....so I tried it and so far we have been nit free for over 6 months.

another mum here with lice - urgh. It's a first for me, dd1 has had them countless times, but it's dd2 who passed them on to all of us except dh this time. She was totally infested - I must admit I only ever checked dd1 regularly.
I used bug buster combs but two have broken now, so have ordered a full set of rather expensive nitty gritty stuff. It's arriving today - I can do a full side-by-side review Bug Buster vs. Nitty Gritty.

Now, where's the mumsnet 'best buys against lice' section?
