Hi, I am a stay at home mum with a 12 month old boy. He has been a bit off color last few days. He has had very slight temps, bit grizzly, slight diarhoea, a bit off his food but still eating a reasonable amount and very sleepy during the day. This is day 3 of this and I thought it was teeth as his bottom gums are very swallen and I can see white lumps where his molars want to erupt. Today when he was crying before his nap I noticed that his (blobby things at back of throat)tonsils/adenoids? looked very red and maybe with white patches on. Is this normal, I wouldnt think he had a sore throat with waht he is willing to eat, toast, crackers etc? Any ideas, should I get him to doctor? He just doesnt seem real sick but dont want to miss anything. Hi everyone by the way nice to meet you all.

Red tonsils with white patches sounds very much like tonsilitis.
I'd take him to Dr's just incase he needs antibiotics, always best to be sure

Good luck.

I'd be a bit cautious of the anti-biotics as he's not that ill overall i.e. still eating and drinking and temp not v. high. He may well have a bit of a throat / tonsils infection, but if he can fight it off himself, so much the better, and save the antibiotics for something more serious. I think statistics prove that anti-biotics don't actually speed up the healing of a mild infection that much, and you still have gut repurcussions from antibiotics to contend with i.e. need to give baby probiotics and antibiotics will have caused problems in his gut like removing the good bacteria.

I'd still take him to the doc, but just be wary of the old anti-bio's and just keep the presc in the cupboard in case he suddenly gets worse.

hth!

Thanks for that, yes I will take him in to clinic but maybe like you suggest just hold onto any scripts as we dont like him to have antibiotics. Would the other symptoms soound like throat infection, I wouldnt think he would eat if he had a sore throat??
