buy a Vistas laptop and install XP on it. laptops sold with XP - will never be upgradable and you are wasting your money.

if you need XP because you have a compatibility issue ..... tell me more ....

Just can't see the point in Vista, it doesn't do anything much better than XP but is so blubbery and demanding of resources, surely it will just slow it down?
Enlighten me please

When I looked at Dell you can opt for Vista or XP in their options menu.

This story was in ComputerActive magazine recently.
I have Vista on a laptop & a pc - I haven't yet come across any major issues - or at least not since I upgraded the RAM on the PC from 512 Mb to 2.5Gb - 2 GB is pretty much the minimum. I know there are some issues with some accounting programs.

but I think that is only for desktops ... now having looked at Dell for a while I may be wrong

The XP - Vista debate is vast - if you have drawn your own conclusions and your message suggests you either
a) have, or
b) are quoting someone else's view

I'm not getting into the debate, you have freedom of choice. However, buy an XP laptop and within 18 months you will be replacing it. You will get old technology.

the good news is you can pick up bargain machines if you are happy to stay on XP

from the link

Microsoft had originally planned to stop shipping new copies of XP to hardware vendors on 31 January 2008.

However, after PC makers lobbied the company to extend the deadline, Microsoft moved XP's termination back to 30 June 2008.

The company I work for buys most of their computers from insight. My mum even bought one from them

I know their ibm laptops can come with xp or vista, whichever you prefer.

Thanks for the info everyone, I'll do a bit more research and have a think. It's not that I'm a Luddite about Vista, but laptops always feel really slow to me compared to any of our desktops. More horsepower always

You need to buy a "business" laptop. You can still get them with both, i.e. they'll have Vista preinstalled and an XP recovery disk to allow you to upgrade.

e.g. a Toshiba Satellite Pro P200-1KD.
