Mine does this periodically, and I think it is related to overheating and dust accumulation through fans/keyboard. I bought one of those cans of 'air' (photographers use them to blow dust off of film), and I give the keyboard and fans on the underside a good blast once a week and it seems to make a difference.

Maybe give that a try?

It's overheating most likely.

Is the vent for the heater being covered up? (by a cushion or something?)

You also might need a new power supply. A couple of the power packs for mine have gone awry over the years.

Got it from a store that sells computers and office supplies.

IIRC, Ryman sells them too - they're usually behind the till. Make sure you get the little straw that comes with the can - it's usually taped to the can - because without it, you won't be able to 'spray' the air.

It's not an Acer is it? Some recent Acer models have trouble restarting the fan when they wake up from hibernation - if it is, you can try removing the hibernation option, but you may have to uninstall Acer's own Power management sytem first.

My PC has done it from time to time.

Is it on a "loop" of going on and off when you boot up?

My short-term solution was to open in safe mode and do a System Restore.

I was told it could be a software or hardware clash. The chap who told me that cleaned up all the extraneous stuff on my PC and updated all my old programs. He also installed something called Cleanup and something called Advanced Windows care V2 personal. I run them both occasionally.

Took him about 2h to do.
Best £50 I've spent in ages.

what i mean is, does it go off-on, off-on, on its own?

System restore is something you can do if you enter in Safe Mode at startup - think it's the F4 or F5 key.
