Free anti virus download

My AVG free download is about to expire does anyone know of another decent one that's free? TIA

I've got one called VirusScan.
It's free to update but I don't know if it was free to install as it was done by a friend.
I also have AdAware which is one that you use to do scans. That one is free for private use.

I've been saying that AVG 8 is fine. I now have doubts that it is and I'm going to try out Avast when I get some free time.

AVG 8 does something on bootup which looks like a scan even when I have scans disabled. This slows the PC down drastically. It seems to slow it down at other times too, but I'm unable to find out what it's actually doing.

If it's not going to obey your choice of settings it's no longer a solution, but a part of the problem.

Greyriverside - in the Advanced settings - Schedules do you have any of the boxes ticked that say 'run on start-up if task is missed?'

no problems so far

greyriver...have you checked out the AVG forum? they might have the answer to your problem
