Ok my laptop when turned on keeps doing this - it displays the Phillips screen, then the black page with white text telling me to start windows normally , then Windows XP then a blue flash (which I think is an error message) then back to the black screen telling me to start windows normally again.

i have tried pressing crl alt delete, turning off at mains, taking out battery and putting it back again to no avail.

Anything else I can do to restore the desktop?

Hopefully not going to have to take to repair shop.

Thanks anyone

DH thinks it may be a motherboard error.

Ok that's not good news - I will have to take it for repair, if it's repairable.

It has been a totally crap laptop by the way - as it went away for repair several times in the first few months. I have had it since Dec 06.

I think it might have had a replacement motherboard.

It's a Phillips Freevents. Bought from Currys.

Never again.

When you're on the black screen, does it give you any other options?
If there is one saying Last Known good configuration, use the arrow keys to move to that one & press enter.

Yes it does that but then goes back that same page again and again (like a circular argument).

So think it's f*d.

You could try booting into safe mode by repeatedly tapping F8 as it starts but it doesn't sound hopeful tbh.

Hi everyone - well took laptop to repair shop and it has a faulty hard drive. It's gonna cost #120 to repair.

I will get it repaired but grudge paying it really.

Never get a Phillips Freevents laptop anyone.
