Hi

I am useless at techie stuff.

When I used to go to my internet homepage, I just had to put the first letter into my mail box and it brought up my user name and password automatically. Overnight it has stopped. It's a REAL pain having to type both every time. How can I make it remember???

is there a "remember me" box to tick on your login?

I think it is connected to the autofill function - this remembers words you have typed before.

i'm on a mac so I can tell you how to sort it out on that i think but if you're on a pc i'm sure someone else will be able to sort it.

is it just the one place that's started doing this?
It could be a cookie problem. If you can find the cookie (usually named after the site) and delete it then it may work right again.

Also look at Internet Options in the control panel. On the Content tab there is a button marked Autocomplete which allows you to choose what should be remembered

Thank you, have tried to set auto complete to see if it works.

I have another question: Mozilla Firefox. What is it?

For some reason it now is the portal to open my internet explorer. Yet when I want to download certain things (new version of Adobe)it says I need to close Firefox. I have no idea how I ever opened it and even less on how to close it.

Any advice?

Firefox is a replacement browser for internet explorer. I don't know how you got it, but if you really don't want it you can uninstall it in Control Panel - Add Remove programs

Some say it's better than IE, but there are some sites it can't handle so you have to learn how to swap between them.

It's probably the source of your current problems since it has it's own settings for remembering things and security etc.

BUT you can get a little add on for Firefox called IETab which allows you to open incompatible pages in an ie tab within firefox which is nifty!

Firefox is much better, and less prone to little security problems

Greyriver - how do I swap between them? At the mo, I can't even get pdf files open in firefox.

I have a Mozilla Firefox icon and my old internet explorer one but I get the same thing when I click on either.

It also drives me mad because I am unfamiliar with the layout and google is set at US version.

Lazy what is an IE tab and how do I get it?

cam: When in Firefox, select Tools:Add Ons, then at the bottom of the table that opens, there is a link to "get more extensions". When you are there do a search for "IE Tab" and click on install. I think that if you have the latest version of Firefox, you may need to get an older version of the extension, I had to, so click on the link that tells you about older versions and choose one of them.

It should be enables when you restart firefox. You do need to move the icon onto your toolbar though, from the customise screen on the toolbar itself....

HTH!

(I find that it works with almost all IE pages, but with a few, you might still need IE, though it's been a long time since I have)

Sorry for longwinded nature of post

To make Internet explorer the default browser do this.

In Control panel - Run Add-Remove Programs.

On the left side of 'Add-Remove Programs' is 'Set Program Access and Defaults'
Click on that and then click on Custom. You will see the option to set Internet Explorer as default.

Since it sounds like installing Firefox is what caused your problems I would certainly stick to IE for the time being. Uninstalling it if necessary to get things working again.

You can always weigh up the pros and cons and install FF later on.
