Help me sort out my keyboard

Dp rebooted our computer and since then some of the keys don;t do what they should.

When I press shift and 3 instead of a pound sign I get #

When I press shift and 2 instead of the inverted commas I get @

When I press shift and ' instead of the @ sign I get ".

There are probably other glitches I have not found yet.

Hmm sounds like you are not on the right keyboard setting. You may be on US settings.

I think you need to go to control panel, keyboards UK (certain number of keys - can't remember)

OR you may need to change the language set-up which is also in control panel (but not as obvious that it affects the keyboard IYSWIM.

Sorry gotta dash DD3 is settling to sleep on the floor....she needs her mummy.

Hope someone can explain it better//more detail.

Yes there is an option somewhere to alter your keyboard and what symbols get displayed.

If you were in another country, the symbols on the keys would be in a different order - your PC only knows what keys you hit, not what is printed on them.

I can't remember where this option is hidden but it could well be under control panel and display settings or similar.

If you are using Windows XP, in the control panel find Date/time/Language and Regional options, then select Regional and Language options. Then as SlightlyMadSweet said you need to change the language to English (UK).

Hope this works.

Thats it Hellion...I knew it was potentially obscure and not necessarily related to keyboard options.

Sounds like you got the cure there, but if you're wondering how it happened you may have an icon to change languages on the taskbar. It may look like a "?"

If you remove the unwanted Language it will disappear or you can untick Language bar in that same Regional and Language options thing.

Pressing Left ALT - Shift usually switches between keyboard settings if you have more than one set up.

You have number lock on.

You need to find the button with the Number Lock written on (prob iin blue) and press Function + that button.

try what hellion said above as it may cure it. if you have only one keyboard option then you could try adding another and swapping back in hopes that will reset it.

You might even have to change to a US keyboard setting, remove the UK one and then add the UK one back.

Oh and is there any chance you have a sticky key stuck down? wiggle the various shift/ctrol/alt keys

SlightlyMadSweet, well done for spotting that. I didn't realise it worked like that on a laptop, but they don't have a seperate keypad do they.

Grey - I think TS has been solved...this is a new problem by dragonman

I don't have a laptop, I am going from memmory of work laptop. Can you confirm that what I have said is correct?

Yeah was replying to dragonman and could only suggest trying the same cure really aside from the sticky key thing.

I've never used a laptop, but I suppose they must have a different arrangement for number keys etc and so I thought when you posted that you must be correct.

yeah the numerical keypad on a laptop is on the rhs of the kwyboard. They are not seperate keys.
