Preserving macbook battery life

Somebody once gave a tip on how to get your battery to last longer on a macbook (and perhaps on other laptops too) - but I can't remember what it was. Any ideas? Thank you

close any applications you aren't using exp Outlook

it was probably something about not leaving it on charge too long or something similar...
