No space on phone...

Can't update to iOS 7.4 (or something!) as there's no space on my (newish) iPhone 5 16GB. How do I create more space? I've got a new iPad Mini for my birthday today & can't set it up as I want it to sync with my current Apple things. Need to update phone to allow this to happen..help!

I would start by removing any apps you do not use. They can be redownloaded again if you really decide you want them back.

Then look at photos and video clips. Do you need those? Can they be backed up to something else, such as laptop, iCloud?

Settings, General, Usage
That should show you what is using lots of space thus help decide if you really need what is using lots.

I think my main issue is all my pictures. They accidentally reloaded (synced) from my laptop when I got my new phone. Disaster. The are loads of them & I can't seem to remove them onto my laptop.

Try going into settings > iCloud > storage and backup > manage storage > the story so far's iPhone > show all apps
Then from there decide which apps you want to back up. For example..... I choose to back up photos candy crush and contacts as if I get a new phone those are things I want to transfer. However cbeebies, email, and YouTube aren't as important so I turn their back up off.

Go through your photos and delete any you don't want. If you've downloaded them to your laptop you can delete them all. Do the same in camera roll and photo steam.

If the photos synched from your laptop then unless you've actually deleted them from your laptop since, they should still be there - a sync copies photos, it doesn't move them. So if you sync your phone with the 'sync photos' box unchecked it will remove them from your phone
