Geeky stuff

mp3 or wma?

Admission - I am a bit behind but am finally going to put my music collection onto a pc. Initially I'm just going to use the standard windows player for ripping and playing the cd's. I've got 2 options - mp3 or wma files. Have done a quick google and it seems that mp3 might be slightly lower quality but a much smaller file size. So which one to go with?
Neither me nor my immediate friends are very up to date, (in fact they ask me stuff!) hence turning to mumsnet...
Majority of my music is pop/rock/dance music rather than classical. I'm by no means a discerning listener but I do hate things that sound tinny. So should I just go MP3 then my pc may have a chance of lasting longer and I don't have to do some kind of technical storage upgrades if it turns out that my music collection eats up all my memory...
I'm hoping to get back into having music on in the house and connect up with other devices around the house - so it would be good to be future proof as well although I do imagine both formats will be quite well supported in the future...
Thanks

WMA is proprietary to Microsoft. MP3 is supported by pretty much every device you are likely to use whereas support for WMA is more limited. WMA gives better quality at low bitrates but if you go for higher bitrates you probably won't notice the difference.

Personally I always go for MP3 (unless I want top quality - then I go for FLAC).

MP3 at highest bitrate it will do. Much easier to then playback from various devices.

Thankyou Thanks
Operation Mp3 at highest possible bit rate begins as soon as my little girl has her nap!!!

Don't forget also to make sure that digital rights management is switched off in the options for ripping otherwise you won't be able to copy the files to another device.

Oh... Not come across that. Off to check... Fortunately with a 13 month old the process is slow so I haven't done too many yet!
