Am thinking of getting the above for myself and son who is about to start secondary. Is it worth getting them or are they very outdated (bearing in mind, I have a real antique non smart phone)?

No I wouldn't bother getting the above, you should get one of the two new iPhones which you'll get much more out of and it won't be much more expensive!! It is quite out of date now.

For your ds on the other hand, get him a cheapish Samsung galaxy young (what my dd has she has just finishes yr 7 last friday so the year above your boy. ) it does what she needs and is quite a nice, nifty little thing on the exterior!!

I would get a cheap'ish smart phone as it will be less of a problem if it get stolen or broken.

Whatever you get you might want to make sure that he can't access inappropriate websites etc.
