I used to have a Nokia phone which broke whilst still under warranty
I was glad to see the back of it except I loved the sat nav on it
I am back on android and want a similar sat Navy
Is Google maps a proper sat Nav or do I need to download one?

The Google maps app gives you the same functionality as a satnav. Provided you have GPS turned on it will give you everything you need.

Another shout out for Navigation in Google Maps. I've been using it for 6 years and it's never failed me.

Thanks
I guess GPS is in settings?
stupid question- does it tell you where to go I mean out loud?

I don't find navigation in Google Maps that great. If there's a way to set via points, for example, I've not found it. It also seems to use a lot of data.

I use Waze, an app now owned by google. Waze does traffic status, so by driving around you are letting other users (and now google maps traffic overlay) know road speeds in realtime.

I have seen NavFree recommended as a good alternative. I haven't used it myself.

Google maps does give you voice instructions.
It's not as quick at updating your current position as a proper satnav, so sometimes I'm beyond the turning when it tells me to turn, but that's only an issue in town.
If I haven't got a phone/3G signal at the start it doesn't seem to let me start navigation even though the GPS knows where I am.

I've been using the CoPilot app, pricey but it tells you out loud and has clear maps, brilliant.

Cheaper than a sat nav unit anyway!
