The wifi in our house is very patchy. I know you can get boosters, but wouldn't have the foggiest where to start. Can anyone help me please? What would you recommend?

The best one I have used is the Powerline one. It uses your home electrics to send data to the wifi access point.

There is one on special price on Amazon today. Will dig out a link. Very easy setup if your router uses WPS. Bit more tricky if you need to configure it manually - use an ethernet cable between a computer/laptop and the wifi unit to configure.

TPLink AV500 WiFi

You can expand the system in future, by adding either more wifi access points or ethernet access points.

It really is simple. Needs a power socket near your router, plus a power socket in the location you want the wifi signal.

It does not boost the wireless, it creates a new one using the same ID and passcode, so most devices simply lock on to the strongest signal.

Have noticed some devices through a bit of a wobbler, had to tell an android mobile to ignore an error it thought it had, something about unstable connection. Had to tell a Wii to rescan wireless to lock to the right one.

Overall though, really easy to install.
