SONY xperia p camera question

I find the shutter speed / delay on my phone's camera infuriatingly slow. I often miss the photo I wanted or it's blurred. Toddler pics especially!

Anyone had this and found a solution please? I've tried the different scene settings to no avail. Anything else I can try? Are there any apps that are better or offer continuous shooting like my beloved-but-bulky-and -needing-repair DSLR?
