Screen totally smashed. Bits of glass falling out! What's best thing to do?

Is a mini that was a Christmas present which he paid half for. He is devastated I am bloody fuming.

How tecchy/confident are you?

It's possible to fix it yourself, if you buy the right part of the screen approx cost £90 or you'll have to pay Apple around £180 to fix it Shock

Make DS pay for half the repair. Buy an Otterbox case for future.

Go here and book a slot at your nearest Apple store. When DW dropped her iPad they replaced it with a new one for a discount and transferred everything for her.

Shock oh no. Try not to be too angry with him, presuming it was an actual accident, not him flinging it around the room, it could happen to any of us and he is obviously gutted already.

There will be people who fix screens for less than Apple, but if you can afford it, probably best to go to them. If not try asking on Facebook on a local selling site if there's anyone who repairs phones/ipads. Plenty of people buy up old ones and fix broken ones for under £50.

I had my ipad repaired by a local guy for £55. If you google repairs in your area I'm sure something will come up.

Thanks chaps.

He wasn't slinging it around the room but was cross because I gave him a lecture about taking more care over his homework.

DH went into apple in covent garden but hadn't booked an appointment!

The guy in Apple said will be out of warranty whoever fixes it so may as well get it done cheaply but I am a bit worried that if it's cocked up we will have no comeback!

Thought you guys would enlighten me. Grin

I had new glass put in DD's ipad2 by a local repair shop (and her iPod touch as she broke them both in the space of a fortnight!) All good!

iPad minis are more expensive to fix than regular iPads because the screens are glued on. They have to heat the glue to get it off, iirc, and it's not cheap anywhere.

My DC have smashed ours in the past and we took it back to Apple, who replaced it (sorry, can't remember the cost) and we put a protective cover on it.

Out of warranty after a month? Wow, Apple really screw you over don't they?

I wouldn't bother getting it fixed, there's a ton of Android tablets you can buy for the price of fixing the iPad which will be perfectly adequate (and are a lot harder to break).

No. Warranties dont cover someone dropping an item and breaking it.

Accidental damage is not covered by warranty - apple products have a 12 month warranty and I have never had problems with their service or felt screwed over by them. Accidents happen. The screens on the minis are not easy to do as you need to melt the glue with a paint stripper or similar to get the glass off - all without damaging the LCD beneath. Apple store usually accept walk in appointments. Will probably have to wait several hours, but hubby will be given a set time so he can go and wander round town. They will offer a like for like replacement at a discount. Can't remember the price, but at least 50% less than new.
Been there, done that Grin

They are notoriously fragile.
DS1 dropped my iPad a few weeks ago. I took it to a local computer shop who charged me £60 to repair it.
I have since then bought a clip on cover which protects the corners.
