My Dad bought my mum a new phone for Christmas, he took out the contract as a present so it is in his name.

Today my mum has dropped the phone and there is a tiny crack in the screen and about 1cm square of frazzled colour in the top corner. The phone is turning on, beeping when it receives messages etc but she can't swipe the screen to make it active so it is currently unusable.

Does this sound like just a screen replacement, or a new LCD as well? He is cross with her ( yep, he gets cross easily these days - it was just an accident) but he will obviously have to go along with her to organise repairs as it's in his name. Any idea how much this might cost to fix?

I googled repairs, but I'm not sure attacking the phone with a heat gun is a good idea...

It does sound like the LCD is damaged (though someone with more knowledge may contradict this!).
Regardless, it seems that with the S3 it's necessary to replace the LCD and digitizer at the same time (see here ). As you have seen, and if you're feeling brave, it is possible to purchase the LCD/digitizer (around £80 on ebay i think) and fit it yourself.
Or, you could buy the screen etc. yourself, and have someone else fit it. Might work out cheaper?

Thank you - they are going to the Carphone warehouse drop-in fixing place today. I think it will be about £165. Obviously more expensive than doing it yourself, but I think my Dad would go spare if I had a go and somehow made it worse. My mum accepts it as an unlucky accident ( and will also now buy a cover even if she doesn't like the colour!!!)
