haven't been able to access Hotmail/Outlook for weeks now. How do I change email provider

Noseynoonoo · 28/06/2013 11:10

I've had a Hotmail account for 15 years. Since it converted to Outlook it has been atrocious and over the past 2 weeks almost non-existent. I occasionally get in to it but can't open emails or if I get into the actual email I can't open attachments.

I am using IE. Do not want to go to Chrome because I tried that before and the computer gave up on me - several days wasted.

I have cleared browsing history etc as advised on line.

So, clearly the new Outlook and my PC are not compatible. I do gave a Gmail and yahoo account that I don't use so thinking of using those instead. Howeve, I'd like to cjange the actual names - can I do that or do I need new accounts.

How do I get all the info in Outlook out if I can't access it e.g. all the the contacts.

Many applications seem to be linked to my Hotmail e.g I have just paid for something and unprompted the retailer said they would send receipt to Hotmail - so I can't see it now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Piggy backing thread as I've got the exact same problem. I can get into outlook via my phone but options here are limited - can't type properly or attach files.

Yes, I can use my phone but options limited and I use my email for work purposes so I need attachments.

Yes, I have no problem using outlook.com, Hotmail.com. I would think that it could be local to you.

I would highly recommend changing to gmail. Its been a far superior service since it was launched.

If you want to change the actual email address with gmail you will need to create a new account, but you are able to mask the email so it turns up in people in boxes as sender:TheDude where as the email address is actual [email protected]

For weeks when sending mail it would stick on 'sending' and I'd have use back arrow to get off the page(mail was sent) then unable to send attachments pop up of 'sorry outlook unable to send attachments but we're working on it' and now unable to log on at all.

I do have gmail account but like OP says all the contacts are on hotmail.

How do you do that please, Natasha?

Interesting - my DC have been complaining about exactly the same!

niceguy2 I struggle to to open outlook. Then I struggle to open an email and then I struggle to open an attachment. I have been trying to access one particular email for 2 weeks now. Have been trying this morning since 9.05.

I don't think it is local to me - according to: downrightnow.com/hotmail although I can access via my tablet (but not my phone).

12thmonkey How do I mask my address on gmail. Presumably I'd have to give out the correct version if people asked for it (it's really long-winded because I used it for a previous business.

Things like Paypal are attached to Hotmail, and you can't transfer Paypal accounts to different email providers.

How do I access the emails stored in Hotmail. My holiday bookings are in there - I have no proof I've paid for my holiday.

NatashaBee How do I arrange for my Hotmail emails to go to gmail without access Hotmail in the first place?

Hotmail is rubbish since it changed to Outlook. I wondered if it depends on the service provider, but OH says it is the same wherever he happens to be.

I am in the process of changing over to gmail.

That's good to know NatashaB Think I might transfer then - I have wasted a lot of time and money on Hotmail over the last fortnight.

Have you upgraded IE to the latest version? This helped for me, although Hotmail can still be a bit slow.

I've done a lot of fiddling about with the browser. How do I clarify which version of IE I'm on?

Thank you Natasha, I'll see if I can do that later

I'm on my phone right now and even on that hotmail has slowed right down

I've just started a thread on exactly the same topic. I'm so Angry about Outlook. Hotmail ALWAYS, ALWAYS worked. Outlook crawls along at snail's pace on its best days, and freezes up all the rest of the time.

Angry Angry Angry

I KNOW it's a free service, but I really wish there was someone to complain to. Grrrrrrr.

Noseynoonoo wrote " and you can't transfer Paypal accounts to different email providers. "

You can. Login on PayPal site, then click 'Profile' / 'My Details' and if you 'update' the E-Mail section, you should see a 'Primary' e-mail address.

'Add' a new e-mail address. Make the new address your 'Primary' address, and then the original/old mail address can be removed. So there should be nothing preventing you from using an alternative address.

I don't have a Hotmail address associated with my PayPal account - I have a GMail address, one on Spamgourmet.com, and a couple of others (linked to my own domains). You can have up to 8 e-mail addresses on a single PP account.

singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/hotmailoutlook-e-mail-problems-anyone-else

I followed advice in this thread re cache, cookies and updating browser (look at me sounding like I know what I'm talking about!) when I had a similar problem and googled and came across that thread. Worked for me.

I've done this too - after a LOT of ranting and raving - and it seems to have worked for me, too.
