Apple virgin. Apple ID question re 2 ipods

willyoulistentome · 08/05/2013 21:23

My two sons ( 8 & 9) have just managed to save up and buy an i pod Touch each. I have no apple producsts so it's all new to me. I gather I need to set up an Apple ID, and I will have to pay for games and downloads that aren;t free. I also gather there is this Cloud thing that stores my apple stuff, and I can upload and download things from it to other apple devices.

Can I use te SAME Apple ID for both iPods? How do I pay? Do I get a bill. Is there a way to restrict what is downloaded. i.e inappropriate stuff for kids, and also so I don't get a huge bill? I want to have to approve every purchse and enter a pin for it., (Like on my Samsung!) Is this what happens?

I need to know QUICK, cos I promised I'd have this sorted by tomorrow, but they are already harassing me!!!

You can use the same apple id for both iPods.

You can put your settings so that it requests your password every time you try buy an app.

The only downside is that when you download something on one iPod it usually goes on to the other as well, but can easily be deleted if they don't want it.

There is a way of creating two "clouds" for each device, but I am not that clever.

You can use the same I'd for both, but that would mean they'd both have the same content on them, you'd also only have one lot of free storagein the cloud for both, so you'd be better doing two ids. A for paying, you can attach a card to your apple id, and payments comes straight from that. I'd set up the accounts, and keep epasswordssecret so you have to approve all purchases, or you could get a nasty shock.

Thanks. I'm trawling through the apple supprt stuff, but it's not giving me the answers I need. If it was just one device and it was for ME only. it would be simple. I want them to be able to message their friends, and each other, (after homework is finished) so I guess they may need an account each? But I DO need to make sure they are not on horrible shoot-em-up games, or running up huge bills.

Use the same apple id for both. It does not mean you have to have the same content on both. I have the same apple account on my iphone and ds ipod but we do not have the same stuff on them.

You can set it so that apps you download on one automatically downloads on the other or not (so mine are set so that it does not do it automatically on the other).

It is good to have them both on the same apple id because if there are paid apps which they both want, you only have to pay once to get it on both ipods!

Thanks for that. It makes sense. I am on the aple website. Falling at the first hurdle. It wasants my 'primary' email ddress. I only have a work one. Can I use this? Will the boys still be able to message their friends independently of each other? - and message each other?

You will need to activate the restrictions in the settings.

You can set it so that password needs to be entered every time or only every 15mins. I would have the every time option - else they can go on and purchase anything else for 15mins after you have entered the password.

Also very important to turn off 'in app purchases' as it is very easily done to buy add ons within an app. I learnt this the hard way when I got a bill from itunes saying £232 had been deducted from my bank for some in app purchase of a load of useless game points!!

Actually - I also have a gmail email account which I use on my Samsung. Can I use this one as the 'Primary' email address?

Hmm yes, I know about those in app purchases. I have the restrictions all in force on my phone. I downloaded a free game for one son.. a car racing one, then half an hour later he came over to me and asked me to enter my pin to buy £70 pounds for a mechanic to soup up his fictional car. Game got uninstalled instead!

Do you mean the email to set up the apple account? Use any email address you like for that. It is just the one you will need to sign in to your apple account and the one they will email receipts of purchases to. It is not connected to sending messages from the ipod. You can have a different email account set up on the ipod email if they want to use their own email addresses for that (my ds not got to the point of using email yet so his email section is not set up).

My ds has skype app on his ipod and uses that for messaging/calling his friends.

Also if you have 2 (or more) ipods/iphones/ipads on the same account there is a useful app called 'find my iphone' which can locate and send a beep to a device when you sign on from another device if you have lost one. I frequently have to beep my ds ipod for him! It has to be in range of the wifi to be able to be located though.

This is sounding good. So I can get apple receipts sent to my Android phone - ha!
