Minecraft on Ipad

DS wants an Ipad for his birthday... we are not convinced yet...

But playing minecraft on our laptop is clunky, freezes etc, which I read is common.

Is it more streamlined on an Ipad? And will it be OK on a 16MB, or will he need 32MB to make it worthwhile? Other than playing minecraft, I'm sure he'll want some games & music - but probably not videos/movies (yet!).

Do the games & apps use memory space whilst playing, or is it just the download that takes the space?

Will minecraft play OK on an android tablet (samsung galaxy etc)???

Thanks!

minecraft plays fine on android tablets. it will make no difference whether you get a 16gig or 32gig model, you'll have plenty of space for minecraft on it. the app itself doesn't take up a huge amount of space, and it doesn't need extra space whilst it's playing.

if your laptop is very old or has very little RAM memory then it will be clunky, and a newer tablet will probably play much more smoothly. DS has it on my ipad and nexus 7, and it plays vastly better on the n7, but that is because the ipad is a first generation and is underpowered compared to newer devices. a recent gen ipad or a recent (good) android tablet will be fine.

I bought some more RAM for our laptop so that Minecraft would play properly. It was easy to install (youtube instruction vids for everything these days..) And only cost me about 20 quid.

DS1 would spend all day every day playing Minecraft on our Kindles. We have 2 one is 16MB and one is 32MB and he doesn't have any problem with either of them. He also plays without any problem on our 3 yo Macbook. BTW Kindles and the like are far cheaper than Ipads and as far as I can see just as good

Does he play single or multiplayer? Minecraft is only a single player world on iPad so if he plays with friends or will do in the future, he might be better with the more RAM choice or a new laptop.

Thanks Lizzy, he does play multi player. I am thinking laptop might have more flexibility, plus may well need one in future with homework etc...

But I do like the idea of a tablet to fiddle about on... mmm.

Ipads are great for lots of stuff but when it comes to Minecraft a laptop would def be best.
My son started playing single player but quickly moved to multiplayer with his friends, they also skype each other whilst playing, he has a Mini Mac which is fab if you have your own screen and keyboard already.

If they play Minecraft on the laptop/computer, DO NOT BUY a tablet or ipad , they are different games, the computer version has much more content and can be played online, which is the main reason kids play
