I have planted tomatos sweetcorn and corgettes on my windowsil for now. I dont have them in a propogator. Do i need to water every day, they look dry every day, or will i overwater if i do that? I think i rotted my dwarf beans last year like that

As far as i know, lemum, beans often don't germinate if they are too wet/cold. I also have toms and courgettes on my windowsill. I normally give them a really good water just after ive sowed the seed and then they don't normally need antoher water for a couple of days. I suppose it depends on how warm your sill is, or what your're using to water them with.

I only feel the need to water every day if i'm using my water spray/spritzer thing.

I give mine a little spray a couple of times a day. The beauty of them beeing on your sil is that you can keep an eye on them. Just don't let them go completely dry.

My tomatoes are taking AGES this year. I was wondering whether to give up on them but finally have three sheepish little green shoots peeping out.

I'm doing beans for the first time this year. Have been keeping them quite moist and they are sky-rocketing. 12 inches in 10 days.

I realise that I have in no way addressed your OP, but I sensed an opportunity to shoe-horm talk about my seeds into a conversation and I grabbed it.

BroccoliSpears, you may be able to help me. Have you grown Purple sprouting broccoli. I'm harvesting mine at the moment, but i'mnot sure if i've got it quite right. I really need an expert. can you help? Sorry OP. But i'm desperate.

tomatoes will fail to thrive.
beans will rot
sweetcorn won't germinate

water from the bottom, it encourages root growth. unless you have planted your seeds in an enormously deep pot.

(my peppers have come up but i doubt they'll last the week)

Oh I'm early this year as baby due mid April. Am also a complete novice at all this so mostly ignore anything I say / do.

Which brings me neatly to WishIWasAWalton - nooooo idea, sorry! I've never grown broccoli or purple sprouting. I bet someone on mn has though and would be able to advise. How do you mean you've not got it quite right?

Yes, Congratulations Broccoli, i'm so into my veg garden at the moment that your name and the fact that you frequent the gardening forum, made me think that you may have the answer.

Its just that my PSB plant, which i have been nurturing since last summer are currently 'pickable' You have to take out the central head, and the side shoots grow, and then you harvest them, and more shoots grow...etc. We've eaten the central heads (really fantastic) but taking the side shoots now, and along the stems are tiny little sprouts. If i cut the side shoot with decent length of stem i'm not sure if i have cut off the new sprouts before they have a chance to grow.

Sorry to ramble, but i can't find the answer on the net, and i have been so looking forward to harvesting heaps of tender broccoli for months now. I have two raised beds devoted entirely to it. I just need to find someone who has grown it successfully before.

Lucyellensmum, congrats too on your seedlings making an appearance, any sign of the tomatoe yet? I'm waiting until April to do my beans (French).
