what are plants called that come back year after year? perrinals ? or annuals?

Perrenials.

Annuals are the pretty spring flowers or summer bedding plants that die in the automn never to come back. sigh.

Perennials - they are brilliant. Most need a bit of chopping down in autumn or when finish flowering but in return you get less digging, long flowering and lots of colour ...
