How much for a fence?

We have just had a 10 panel fence put in down our garden - normal panels - 6' x 6' which our neighbour arranged for his builder to build. Our neighbour has just told us that our half of the bill is £1000!

Does this sound reasonable to you?

fencing seems to have got very expensive in the last few years - had our done when we moved in and it cost about£800 for labour, new panels/posts and removing a couple of trees. had to get most of it redone recently - new posts but mostly reusing panels and it cost about £900

Sounds a lot, like the whole bill to me. There is a shortage of panels again apparently though.

Sorry, meant to say mine is a similar length to yours so £2000 sounds a bit steep still. I would phone up a timber merchants to get a price for the materials and take it from there (I think there has been a shortage recently due to the storms last winter - so materials may have gone up again in the last few months...)

Why are you splitting the bill? Boundaries are usually the responsibility of one party or another, not usually shared. E.g. in our garden we own the fence on one side, but our neighbour owns the wall on the other side.

We had 15 panels done, with concrete posts and concrete 'runner' type things along the bottom where it meets the ground.

The labour involved uprooting some small trees, hiring a little digger for a day (£70) to dig a long trench for the concrete runners.

Total bill.... £900

A bit steep! We had 6 panels of 6ft fencing put in and it cost us £300 (about 18m ago though) and that was with proper concrete posts too.

There is a lumber shortage at the moment (I can't remember why off-hand) so fences are more expensive than they were a few years ago.

Ask your neighbour for a copy of an itemised bill (where labour is shown separately and by the hour) and double check the prices of panels with a builders yard.

Thanks for your messages - I think I will ask him how he got to the amount that he did.

We are splitting the bill because the whole street is a mish mash and nobody's deeds correspond re: boundaries. As we all get on well and are all after a quiet life we tend to split between us.
