Container herbs

I have a half barrel which has had nothing in it this year except for some daffs which I planted a few years ago.

I'm thinking of changing it to a herb pot but what herbs to put in? It is outside our front door in a very shady, north facing but sheltered position. To give you an idea of the difference that makes to how things grow, the daffs in there starting coming through long before the ones in the garden but do not flower until some time after those.

Any ideas?

Rosemary is one of the few herbs that grows easily in my garden (shady and east facing). I would think that herbs which are native to the British Isles would do better than Mediterranean ones....

Chives are incredibly easy to grow. I have a pot of chives which has lasted 8 years and travelled with me on 2 house moves! You never have to do anything to them apart from a bit of watering if it gets really dry in summer.

Agree with KTP that rosemary is also really easy. We have some in our drive so that I can just pick some off for cooking. You don't even have to water that.
