Tomatoes - I've grown them, but had to put them on the floor in fromt of the window when they got too tall... Does block out a lot of sun and you have that tomatoe leaf smell too... There's always cress!

Not exactly fruit/veg but parsley, basil and sage do quite well on my kitchen window. I buy the plants from the supermarket (rather than growing them from seed because I'm quite lazy) and they generally last for about 3 months so long as I keep watering them and cutting the tips off to use in cooking.

Do you have an outside windowledge you could use? Home grown courgettes and cucumbers taste a million times better than shop bought, and courgettes look quite attractive IMO with pretty flowers and nice leaves.

You could use something like this to grow herbs - this isn't quite what I was thinking of, but you get the idea. You could also grow strawberries in a pot.
