After last summer of wheely bins of maggots due to fortnightly rubbish collections. I have bought a wormery. Set it up in March. Today When we checked it it was full of maggots. Arghhhhhhhhhhhh.

Have got rid of all the rancid food and maggots just now (I hope).
What do I do now?

There is some compost at bottom and soem worms still....

Should I leave it for a few days or add a little food to get it started gradually again?

Any ideas????

Please please please can this thread be withdrawn and a new one started without the m word in the title? I know it sounds petty but I am ultra-phobic, and in a fragile-ish state, and it is making me well up and feel sick [begging emoticon]

what are you putting in it? ideally you shouldn;t put any meat or cooked food in. if you stick to vegetable scraps, the odd bit of newspaper and non-shiney cardboard you should be ok. You get tinsy white worms that are a bit revolting, if it gets too acidic, but they're harmless

UMMMM I let DH read the instructions and hence I did put some meat in it However I could see something was wrong so stopped feeding it about 2 weeks ago. Then forgot it till the smell drew us towards it tongiht!

It was pretty foul

urgh! are there some worms in the compost still? if so give them a little treat to get over the shock and as an apology - some worm food if you have it, or some shredded newspaper or just a little bit of veg peelings. They will be very upset with you and may sulk but will probably get over it eventually.

if the worms are absolutely dead then you will have to start again. but no reason why they should be.

oh - and check wigglywigglers.com (or whatever it is) and remind yourself of the instructions

Yes they are still alive. Will give them the night to settle and then feed them tomorrow.

If you have little white worms, put in a bit of bread, and they will all hang out around the bread. Chuck it to the birds then. Thanks to global warming I have fruit flies in mine already.
