Stepping stones in new lawn? Or not?

Just about lay a new patch of lawn. The old one was a mess - overshadowed by large tree, and on heavy clay ground. As a result we put stepping stones through it, which worked well.

We've now cut back the tree, and will rotivate the ground/mix in sand. I think the new design will work better without the stepping stone - but, given that the soil is still clay and the tree is still there, should I play safe and go for stepping stones this time too? It's only about 3 m square...

We're on clay and close to a river (so quite wet!) and we laid a new lawn last spring. We mixed in loads and loads of sand in to new topsoil, far more of both than most people would do, yet I'd say it is still quite a wet lawn. We're about to lay stepping stones for exactly that reason!
