Fruit Trees

My mother wants to buy me some fruit trees for Christmas.

Any ideas or recommendations would be great

not a recommendation, really, but I bought a dwarf apple tree yesterday from the local RHS garden. I don't know the name, 'cos it's out in the garden, and it's a bit dark to go out and read the label.
Bit of a useless post, really, but I wanted to share my fruit tree excitement.

How much space do you have? I had a 'family' apple tree at my last house.It was 3 different rootstocks grafted onto 1 stem & was small enough to fit in a container.It produced loads of apples & they were 3 different varieties.There is nothing like wandering into the garden & picking an apple off your own trees.

What kind of fruit are your family's favourites?

I have a plum which has the most fantastic fruit on it & am intending on getting more fruit trees for this garden next year.

How many trees were you thinking of?
I lived in army housing as a kid, built on land that used to be a German Counts orchard (bet he was pleased!) Anyway, we had 2 apple trees, a pear tree, 2 plum trees (1 early and 1 late fruiting) and 2 cherry trees (1 sweet and 1 sour!)
It was wonderful, as we seemed to have fruit all year round (with the help of the freezer).
If I had room, that's the sort of stuff I'd like, with the addition of a gooseberry bush, I think.
Unfortunately I just have a 10 meter high fir tree that only produces 400 tons of pine cones. Oh, and my new dwarf apple tree.

i have 2 pear trees in my back garden.
My next door neighbour has a fig tree and he's given us some, and yesterday he picked some v dark looking bunch of grapes to give to us

Just moved into a new house and we have a pear tree. I am totally dense, but the pears are not very big, are they edible?? if so, shouldn't they be ripe by now???

check out cross pollination issues (sound like you would be ok with pears since you have them already).

Work out when you want the fruit - eg later for storing through the winter or earlies so you get the first taste (eg Katy is a good apple for that).

Some plums/greengages are nice.

If you have a sunny wall then maybe a peach/nectarine or a kiwi ?
