Rotten roots

Can anyone explain why I might have lost two wisteria, two lavender bushes and a broom this summer? They were all thriving more or less side by side and then died suddenly - at different times. When I pulled them up they had hardly any root ball. The roots that were there appeared to have either rotted or been eaten. Any advice would be appreciated.

was the area flooded at all? the wet weather may have caused it to rot. i have a bizarre corner of the garden where things die really quickly, i found out that the cat next door had been weeing there.

One of the wisteria died last year actually so the problem began last year and got a lot worse this year. Our neighbours have a pond just the other side of the bed on their side of the fence. Wonder if it is leaking? Will have to investigate. If that is the problem, I'm not sure what the chances are of getting them to fix it though!!

Thanks for your reply, southeastastralplain
