Ideas for window boxes

Hey

I have got a few window boxes and as a novice gardener have very little idea what to do with them! Although really want to learn...

I'd like to put herbs in one but has anyone got any suggestions? What herbs should I plant? And what should I put in the other boxes, of course I realise winter is coming so it may be difficult!

Something for the winter? I have peaked in my container gardening book and it suggests a permanent planting of evergreen plants such as Aucuba japonica 'variegata', Euonymous fortunei, tiny conifers or variegated ivy. Then add winter-flowering pansies for colour. In the spring you can change the pansies for some spring flowering palnts. A trip to the garden cenre for you I think!

What herbs do you use?
parsley, rosemary, thyme, marjaram, bay, will all go through the winter fine. In summer you can be more adventorus with chervil, corriander and other annuals I wouldn't bother with basil outside as unless it is in a very sheltered spot it won't do well. Look out for chocolate mint it really dos taste of chocolate so you can enjoy it without the calories
