Cost of garden redesign

Hi all,

We recently moved house and the garden we inherited from the previous owners is in a bit of a state. I'd like to have it redesigned. I had quotes ranging from £200 to £1,200 for design only, i.e. the designer will plan out the layout and workout a planting scheme with you and then you can decide who to use to implement the design. This is obviously a costly exercise.

Could someone please share their experiences with regards to costs and their approach to a complete garden renovation? I appreciate that costs will vary depending on the size of the garden, area and what you want to do but I would like just an idea of maybe a price range and also to hear about the ways people approach this and what was learned from experience.

Many thanks for sharing.

Hi tiggerkid. You don't say how big your garden is. I've always done my own garden designing, making, maintaining. More expensive is not always better. See if it's possible to see previous work by the designers you have approached so far. I would get 3 more quotes, as there are plenty of garden designers out there. Not all of them know what they are talking about. Once it's done, it will still need to be maintained. If you are very busy and not that interested in gardening yourself it might be best to go for a low maintenance planting scheme. The hard landscaping is expensive, but when it's expertly done it can give years of pleasure with parties on your patio, decking or whatever you choose. Good luck, hope it goes well.
