When you re-point paving slabs on a patio ...

What do you do first? We have loads of weeds growing through, the slabs are filthy and the cement between them is breaking up.

Which of the jobs do you tackle first and what do you use? I am guessing Resolva for the weeds, and then pulling them up once they're dead, but I don't know what else.

we had ours repointed a couple of years ago. They stripped out the mortar and repointed. Seemed to know what they were doing. My dad visited at the time, tutted and said it was a waste of money and as soon as there was a frost it would all crack and the weeks would grow through. he was right.

do you think I shouldn't bother then atticus? And maybe just put weedkiller down and pull up the weeds when that has taken efefct? And maybe just pressure wash them all down after that?

I'm no expert (Grin clearly since I let them do it incorrectly!) but my Dad seemed to think that unless it was all stripped out (even the bits that aren't loose) It would just crack and come out over and over again.

I would get rid of the weeds and wash them down and then reassess. Pressure washing can loosen the mortar even more so you might be better with a patio cleaning solution and a firm brush.

I think I will do that then atticus. I'm sure it will look a lot better then. Maybe I won't notice that the mortar is all cracked after that.
