What to put in this bed please?

Our garden is disgracefully overgrown, so I tackled one of the beds over the weekend. After lots of cutting back and weeding, all that is left in there is a small fuschia, two low conifers (which I have cut right back as they were so sprawling), lavender and a pieris.

The bed is north facing, but it does get lots of sunlight as it is away from the house and its not very built up immediately around our house.

So, what shall I plant in it? I know nothing about planting. I do need to dig the soil over and weed properly. I am after low things with a bit of coverage, but not too much. The bed is probably 12 feet wide by 5 feet deep.

What about Cotoneaster horizontalis? It grows low and would be good in north facing bed.

That looks lovely, thank you. And low maintenance! Any other suggestions would be very welcome. I think the bed could take a few things. I was wondering whether a spotted laurel would grow too tall. I really don't know what I'm doing, to be fair.

Hardy geraniums would look good, heuchera's for colourful foliage or how about a hydrangea or skimmia if you want another shrub.
