Quote for cutting a tree down- is this fair?

For completely cutting down a 12m silver birch tree, plus cutting a 10m leylandii tree down by a third plus trimming the sides = £350.

Does this sound ok or a rip off? I have no idea! Thanks :)

My mum was quoted £250 recently for a huge tree in her garden. Recently. In the end my husband and a neighbour did it for beer :)

Probably ok, I live in Manchester. I was stunned to find out how much tree surgeons charge. Make sure quote includes costs to get rid of waste. Generates quite a lot of rubbish. We got a cheaper guy then skipped the waste & loads of passers by kept knocking on & asking to take it for firewood.

I've asked him to chop up the tree for firewood for us and that's in included. The £350 is the total but the silver birch is ours and the leylandii is our neighbours (who I've not spoken to about this quote yet!). How much would each of us pay? Do you think half each or should my neighbour pay more given his leylandii is humongous? It's very wide and dense and although our birch is slightly taller, it's skinny and just twigs and no leaves ATM so easier to remove? Although we are chopping the birch to the ground.

I think that sounds like a fair price. Splitting the cost equally would probably be the easiest way to handle things, in the interests of neighbourly relations. Or you could ask your tree surgeon how much of his time will be spent on each tree.

Do check there's no Tree Preservation Order covering your area. I have discovered my efforts getting people in to provide quotes in the snow to have a 10m silver birch cut down have been in vain as there's a blanket TPO covering the whole area.

We have had a few trees felled and removed. Thst sounds ok to me.

Check they are insured!

They will chop the tree to ground level, is that grinding it down? They are insured and if I say yes to the job they then check if there's a TPO on the trees.

The stump will still be left in the soil by the sound of it, up to you if you're happy with that or not.

Wow that's extortionate! What kind of tree is it? Is it more expensive cos it has a TPO?

I don't think that sounds too bad. Assuming they'll leave it tidy. Nice to have firewood too. You could always get another quote.

Ask the company to give a more detailed quote, I.e. the cost per tree so that you know which tree costs what.

Tree surgery is inherently dangerous so on the face of it £350 isn't extortionate really. Disposal alone is expensive.

We had one tree felled and two pruned - £300. We are south coast - had several quotes and all the same. I think that's reasonable.
