quick tulip question

Should the tulip tips be showing by now? I planted mine late and can't see anything, so am wondering if they don't stand a chance or if maybe they will spurt up when it gets warmer.. I think it was the last few days of November when I planted them.

Mine are showing, but they're in a sheltered North facing position. I think I planted them early Nov, not sure tho!

Tbh I'd expect this cold weather to have put them on hold, wait awhile, I'm sure they'll pop up eventually. I've often planted really really late and they do come thru in the end.

I can't remember I'm afraid - they're still covered in snow! The snow however is only 4" deep, so they're shorter than that.

The ones in pots from last year are now showing about two or three inches. This year's bulbs are still in their packets.

::must do better::

Mine in the packet until Sunday. Quite a few had started sprouting so I've stuck them all in. My Dad planted his pack 2 weeks ago ad said they have just started coming through, sheltered garden though.

Thank you, I am now hopeful!

I remember asking a very similar question about alliums last year and I did get seven out of the ten flowering in the end. This year all ten have come up, so I hope the tulips are the same.

Just to update in case anyone cares, I have just been out to peer in the pots and four tips are just up, really just the very tips. So that is very exciting.

I have about 2 inches worth of growth on my tulips planted in october.

But i am in the south and although it has been very wet we have had hardly any frost. I am hoping for a good display as from the look of it everyone i planted has come up.

I have some Darwins in pots (planted in two depth layers for a massive display) and it looks like they are all up now, between one and two inches (sunny South)

Hardly any of the Apeldoorn in the ground are up.

Can you explain about planting at two depths? How much deeper is the lowest, and how much will it delay flowering by?

all of the tulips in the front of my house (year 4 for the bulbs and they seem to have done some serious propagating) are up. some even in flower on stumpy 2 inch stems.
however... at the back, in two beds and two pots there is not the tiniest hint of any one of the several varieties of ruinously expensive / extravagant Sarah Raven mixed bulbs. I shall be very, very disappointed (furious) if they don't show (how long do I give it before I allow fury to set in?)

at two depths...

they flower out at the same time.

the idea is that the spikes of the lower ones come up between the upper bulbs. they will find their way round each other if necessary. you only need enough space so they are packed in soil and not touching.

I think that the bloody squirrels have eaten all (almost 100) of mine...bastards!
