Healthy, fast, easy recipe book recommendation for student

Morning

My eighteen year old DS is about to start university. Twenty years ago when I was starting uni I was given a book "Grub on a Grant" which was really fun ans useful but has dated a bit.

My sister is about to start a course in sports science so is super health conscious but she hasn't cooked for herself an awful lot and I hoped someone might be able to give a good recommendation of a recipe book that would give her enough of a spread of everyday ideas plus stuff that might be special enough if she was cooking for others.

I may be doing to the wrong thing by giving her an actual book but I hope it's better for ideas/browsing.

Thanks.

I can't remember the titles, but there are a couple on Amazon that have lots of good reviews. Just put 'student cookbook' in the search box and they'll come up as the most popular appear first. My friend has one of them and uses the recipes for her family because she finds them straightforward.

Rather than get a specifically student cookbook I'd suggest one of Nigel Slater's early books. I really like Appetite. It starts with basic recipes and then encourages you to make different variations depending on what you have or fancy.

Thanks both. There is a "student nosh" book that looks good but I think Nigel Slater might be the one to go for - I have Kitchen Diaries and it's great but Appetite looks more appropriate (and might look good on her shelf).

Sam Stern does some lovely books. I spotted a new one in Costco yesterday.

He's written a few cookbooks aimed at students which are really good which are available on Amazon.

I had grub on a grant too! (ha! Grant!)

Thanks drzeus, looks her style.

And yes Twasbrillig "grant" indeed - lunch on a loan anyone?

One of my first meals was a Vesta curry (powdered instant curry from what I remember) that a neighbour had parcelled up for me along with various tinned and preserved goodies.

(Student meals, I hasten to add.)

we had Grub on a Grant too - I remember the baked bean lasagne with much fondness - and have cooked it when going through a lean patch in more recent years!

Another vote for Nigel Slater here - Real Fast Food is absolutely brilliant and was my post-university cooking bible when it was first published

Thanks Earthmither, Nigel's recipes are great - realised I have his 30 Minute Meals too which fed my 20s.

Nigel Slater's Real fast food - lovely ideas and aoproach to food, if ypu have that you can experiment and what else is uni for?

The Nosh for Students and Vegetarian Nosh for Students both look really good (have bought the latter for dd). Nigel Slater okay but would personally choose Real fast Food over Appetite.

Sam Stern also okay BUT I have decided that he annoys the crap out of me, mostly because I think his mother actually wrote them. No self-respecting teenager would use such wince-inducing phrases, but a woman desperately trying to sound like a teenager might. I can't look at them any more because they make me shudder so much but there are some good, simple ideas in them. They do assume ownership of blenders and such too, and also have some expensive ingredients.
