Lemon marmalade...not enough sugar!

Can I use darker sugar and icing instead? Looong shot, I know. For some unknown reason I suddenly decided to make a cake an hour into boiling lemons for marmalade and have left myself with half the amount of sugar I need blush I imagine this will be a resounding NO! as temp sugars take to set plus colour of dark sugar etc etc... ?
